REPORTS TO: AVID Classroom Teacher

 

WORK YEAR: 10 Months

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Under direct supervision, tutor students in small study groups, provide intensified learning experience for students; assist in the preparation of instructional materials; perform other work as required. 

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Tutor students in small study groups, assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders.
  • Determine from student notes and discussion with the teacher, the concepts that need to be taught or re-taught.
  • Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.
  • Become familiar with the materials in the AVID libraries.
  • Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.
  • Conduct mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Conduct brainstorming and clustering sessions.
  • Respond to student writing in the form of AVID discourse mode writing assignments, which students have had the opportunity to revise and edit.
  • Contact teachers regarding course outlines and assignment schedules as directed by the AVID Coordinator.
  • Assist in the development of a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions.
  • Communicate frequently with the AVID Coordinator regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge of:

  • English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Routine record keeping.
  • Basic arithmetical concepts.

Ability to:

  • Assume responsibility for assisting in the supervision of students.
  • Learn and utilize standard teaching aids and office machines.
  • Implement public education goals and objectives.
  • Perform routine clerical work.
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, positive and receptive attitude toward children.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Perform basic first aid.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students, parents and the general public.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Personal Qualities:

  • Willingness and ability to take direction from supervisors.
  • Maturity and adaptability.
  • Good work habits and productive use of time

Physical Abilities:

  • Pass District physical examination, which includes pre-employment drug screening
  • Proof of negative TB test at time of hiring
  • Good health, mobility, and patience

Licenses:

  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license

Salary:

  • Column 1, Row 1 of the Classified Salary Schedule
